The ascension of Ashkavor's new guardian was supposed to be a triumphant moment. The crowd pressed in, eager to feel the bond as he bound their souls to his. But as his final brush strokes hit the runestone, something went horribly wrong. The ichor he'd mixed into his inks, meant to amplify their power, instead corrupted them. The binding spell he'd cast turned on him, and inky darkness snaked up his brush, over his hands, and soon covered his face. He couldn't scream, but he could feel the power of the Ascended bond flowing into him, more than he'd ever imagined. He drew deep from the bond, pulling on the life force of his people, but it wasn't enough. In desperation, he pushed the corruption back along the bond itself, into the souls of the Ashkavorans. When the ink finally receded, he opened his eyes to a changed world. Every man, woman, and child had been transformed into terrifying shades, their bodies now made of viscid, tainted ink.
