Lore

Aurel had spent his life in wars and revolutions, and the brass finally decided he'd seen enough. They gave him a pension and a few trinkets, but he left with something more valuable: a forgotten schematic for a Gyrocopter, the world's first manned, non-magical flying machine. He retired to the Ash Archipelago, and for a decade he built and failed, wondering if mechanical flight was even possible. Then, one sunny afternoon with a southerly breeze, he sat in his latest attempt, expecting disaster. He pulled the ignition cord, covered his head, and waited for the explosion. Instead, he began to lift, and after a few panicked adjustments, he stabilized. Within an hour he was flying level with the gulls, filled with wonder. But as he turned for home, a cannonball tore through his tailfin. He crashed into the sea, swam to shore, and watched the ship collect his wreckage. Days later, back at his workshop, he started building another gyrocopter, this one with a much heavier, more dangerous payload.
